Disclaimer:      Please note this list is currently a work in progress; all Sheriffs listed in red are still in the process of being confirmed.

[1] Sheriff James Johnson died within three months of taking office.  It is presumed his successor was the runner-up in the election for Sheriff; however, this information has not be confirmed at this time.

[2] Francis X. Thompson was elected Sheriff in 1891; however within one week of his election he resigned the Office of Sheriff.  At the time of Thompson’s election, election officials were not aware that the Maryland State Constitution prescribed that an individual must be at least twenty-five years of age to qualify for the Office of Sheriff.  After receiving his commission Sheriff Thompson was advised he could remain in office, but he chose to resign stating that having been sworn to uphold the Constitution he could not  in good conscious retain the office if he did not meet the required qualifications.

[3] Sheriff George F. Sanger died while in office on September 10, 1976.

[4] Sheriff Joseph L. Somerville was appointed by Governor Marvin Mandel in 1977 to serve as Sheriff for the remainder of ex-Sheriff Sanger’s term.
