The St. Mary's County
Sheriff's Office was established in 1637. We were the first Sheriff's Office
in the state of Maryland and among the first in the United States. In the
beginning, the Sheriff was appointed by the Governor of Maryland. Under the
provisions of the Maryland Constitution in 1776, the Sheriff became an elected
official. The Sheriff was authorized to appoint an Under-Sheriff, much like
the Deputy of today. They served at the pleasure of the Sheriff. In 1978,
St. Mary's County Deputies were incorporated into the county's Merit System.
The St. Mary's County
Sheriff's Office has a rich and distinguished history serving the Citizens of
St. Mary's County. We are looking forward to a future of continuing the
tradition that Sheriff James Baldridge began years ago - a future that you can
be a part of.
