The COPs Unit was formed in August 2013, joining the community in working with neighborhood partners to address crime and quality-of-life issues impacting the residents and businesses throughout St. Mary's County. Deputies of the COPs Unit work in the community on a daily basis, not only serving as law enforcement, but as community partners, employing community-based policing techniques to detect, distract, degrade and dismantle criminal activities. We recognize the importance of working with community partners and other service providers to improve the quality of life for all.
The Patrol Operations Section provides 24/7 service to the residents, businesses, and visitors of St. Mary’s County through four squads, each led by a Lieutenant, two Sergeants, and a team of deputies. Their primary responsibilities include crime prevention, emergency response, traffic enforcement, and public assistance, ensuring safety and well-being throughout the community.
Deputies also build trust by fostering positive relationships with community members, promoting cooperation between law enforcement and the public. With a focus on visible presence, quick response, and engagement, Patrol Operations is essential to maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
