Identity Theft

Identity theft can happen to anyone. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is committed to helping residents recognize, prevent, and report identity theft and related crimes such as card skimming. Use the information and resources below to protect your personal and financial information and to take action quickly if you become a victim.

Identity Theft: Protecting Your Personal and Financial Information

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information—such as your name, Social Security number, or financial account details—without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. Victims may experience unauthorized withdrawals, fraudulent credit card charges, or even new accounts opened in their name.

Recovering from identity theft can take time, but following these steps can greatly reduce your risk.

Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft

Use these tips to keep your personal and financial information secure:

  • Always use security software with firewall and anti-virus protections.
  • Create strong, unique passwords for all accounts.
  • Recognize and avoid phishing emails, calls, and texts asking for personal information.
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails or other sources.
  • Protect personal data. Don't carry your Social Security Card, and store tax records securely.
  • Monitor your bank accounts and credit reports regularly for unusual or unauthorized activity.
  • If your wallet or credit cards are lost or stolen, notify your bank or card company immediately and file a police report.

Skimming Devices and Identity Theft

Card skimming is a common way criminals steal financial information and commit identity theft. A skimming device is a small, hidden overlay placed on top of legitimate card readers at stores, ATMs, or gas pumps. These devices capture your card data—and sometimes your PIN—during a transaction. Criminals can use this information to make fraudulent purchases, clone your card, or sell your data online.

To protect yourself:

  • Inspect card readers for loose or bulky parts before inserting or tapping your card.
  • Shield the keypad when entering your PIN.
  • Use Chip or Contactless payments when possible.
  • Report suspicious devices to store staff or law enforcement immediately.

If you believe you are a victim of identity theft/fraud:
