Volunteer Program

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Volunteer Program was established in 1991. The prospective volunteer is interviewed and a limited background investigation is completed before they are assigned to a position.

Most volunteers work four hours a week and some are on-call for special assignments. Sheriff's Office Volunteers have served in functions such as data entry, fingerprinting, record maintenance, research, data analysis, inventory, library work and crime prevention.

Volunteers at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center help out with such things as literacy counseling, computer programming, equipment maintenance, clothing and bed linen repair, religious counseling and physical fitness training for incarcerated individuals.
