St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Conducts Alcohol and Tobacco Compliance Checks

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Alcohol Enforcement Unit conducted tobacco and alcohol compliance checks at 44 businesses throughout St. Mary’s County on Aug. 12, 2026. Of the 44 businesses checked, 41 passed the compliance check by requesting identification and verifying the CI’s age.
The compliance checks were conducted using a 20-year-old Sheriff’s Office confidential informant, or CI, who attempted to purchase tobacco and/or alcohol products from the businesses. The CI was dressed in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt and was accompanied by Sergeant Robert Merritt of the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division. Sgt. Merritt, who was dressed in plain clothes, observed the transactions.
Three businesses failed the compliance check and sold a tobacco product to the CI without requesting identification or otherwise verifying the CI’s age. The clerks involved in the violations were issued DC-028 Uniform Civil Citations for selling tobacco products to a person under 21 years of age.
