Since its launch in September 2021, the SMCSO’s Co-Responder Program has been a key initiative in mental health intervention in St. Mary’s County. Led by Alexis Higdon, the Community Mental Health Liaison, the program pairs Crisis Intervention Team members with mental health professionals to provide immediate assessments and interventions during calls involving individuals in crisis. This approach has helped over 150 individuals access mental health care services in the past three years, contributing to the Sheriff’s Office’s efforts to reduce suicide risks and improve mental health outcomes.

In FY2025, the Sheriff’s Office mental health liaison created a comprehensive list of support services and posted it on our website, providing the public with one-stop access to behavioral health resources and crisis management.
