The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Team (EST) is a highly trained, specialized unit that responds to critical incidents requiring advanced tactical capabilities beyond those of routine law enforcement operations. Working in close partnership with the Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT), EST is deployed during incidents where preserving life, protecting the public, and safely resolving dangerous situations require specialized personnel, equipment, and training. These incidents include, but are not limited to, barricaded subjects, hostage situations, high-risk warrant service, armed or dangerous suspects, dignitary protection details, and other complex or high-risk emergencies.
The primary mission of the EST is the preservation of life through disciplined tactics, deliberate planning, and coordinated decision-making. Every deployment is guided by a commitment to resolving incidents peacefully whenever circumstances permit, integrating tactical operations with crisis negotiation techniques to achieve the safest possible outcome for all involved. EST also works collaboratively with neighboring law enforcement agencies during regional and mutual aid responses, ensuring the Sheriff’s Office remains capable of effectively supporting large-scale, complex, or multi-jurisdictional incidents.
Service on the Emergency Services Team is a demanding collateral assignment requiring a rigorous selection process, extensive specialized training, and a sustained commitment to operational excellence. Team members routinely participate in advanced tactical instruction, firearms and less-lethal training, physical fitness assessments, and realistic scenario-based exercises designed to prepare them for rapidly evolving, high-risk incidents.
