Under the command of Captain Richard Russell, the Special Operations Division (SOD) of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety and fulfilling legal responsibilities. SOD oversees Judicial Services, providing security at the Circuit Courthouse, supporting child support enforcement, and managing civil process services, evictions, and court actions.

The division also handles state-mandated training and firearm qualifications for agency personnel, working with the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) and the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy (SMCJA) to deliver essential law enforcement training.

SOD enhances community safety through traffic initiatives, including speed trailers, DUI saturation patrols, and public education programs like D.A.R.E. and Camp D.A.R.E. The division also leads youth engagement through the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.

Additionally, SOD oversees the Emergency Services Team and Alcohol/Tobacco Enforcement Unit, utilizing specialized resources like motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles to support its mission. Through these efforts, SOD reinforces the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to accountability, trust, and public safety in St. Mary’s County.
