Crime
When officers respond to incidents in which a crime has occurred, a formal report is generated documenting the event. Several data points are gathered during this process to provide information to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). NIBRS is one of four data collection systems implemented under the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as a standardized method of reporting crime data. This allows law enforcement and the general public to compare data across multiple entities based on equivalent definitions.
Agencies that report using NIBRS follow the same set of reporting criteria, as defined in the NIBRS User Manual. Through NIBRS, agencies report data on each offense and arrest within 28 offense categories, comprising 71 specific crimes known as Group A offenses. For each Group A offense that comes to their attention, the agency collects administrative, offense, property, victim, offender, and arrestee information. Agencies report only arrest data for an additional 10 Group B offense categories. Data pertaining to crime statistics in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, including all data reported by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office through NIBRS, can be found at the following locations.
